Maharashtra Debates Solutions to Human-Animal Conflict
In Maharashtra, India, there are two big problems: too many stray dogs in cities and leopards attacking people in villages.
The government had a meeting to talk about these issues.
For the dogs, they said there are about 90,000 strays in Mumbai and not enough shelters.
They promised to have more meetings to find a solution.
For the leopards, a minister suggested releasing goats into the forests so the leopards won't come into villages looking for food.
This idea is because the government has to pay a lot of money when leopards hurt or kill people.
Some people in the meeting disagreed with the goat idea and said the government should do other things to help.
They also talked about making more places to keep leopards safe and away from people.
Maharashtra has around 90,757 stray dogs in Mumbai with only 8 shelters, prompting calls for more shelters and immediate action.
Forest Minister Ganesh Naik proposed releasing goats worth ₹1 crore into forests to deter leopards from human settlements.
Leopard attacks are concentrated in Pune, Nashik, and Ahilyanagar districts, with 55 deaths reported in Junnar alone.
The state government plans to expand leopard rescue centers in Junnar and propose a new one in Ahilyanagar.
Legislators debated the effectiveness of the goat proposal and the need for more concrete measures to address human-animal conflicts.
