Chinese Hackers Target US with Venezuela-Themed Malware
A group of hackers linked to China, known as Mustang Panda, sent fake emails to U.S. government officials.
These emails had a file that could steal data from their computers.
The hackers used news about Venezuela to trick people.
The U.S. was trying to remove Venezuela's president, and the hackers quickly made this malware to take advantage of the situation.
The malware was found and analyzed by cybersecurity experts.
China says they don't support hacking, but the U.S. believes this group is sponsored by China.
It's not clear if anyone was actually hacked, but the malware could have let the hackers steal information if it was opened.
Chinese-linked cyberespionage group Mustang Panda targeted U.S. government and policy-related officials with Venezuela-themed phishing emails and malware.
The malware was compiled on January 3 and uploaded to a publicly-accessible malware analysis service on January 5, following the U.S. operation to topple Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
The malware could steal data and enable ongoing access if implanted, but it's unclear if any targets were compromised.
The hackers appeared to be in haste, leaving artifacts that linked the malware to prior Mustang Panda operations.
China denies supporting cyberattacks and opposes the dissemination of false information about 'Chinese cyber threats'.
