Kolkata Hotel Fire Exposes Severe Building Safety Failures

Kolkata Hotel Fire Exposes Severe Building Safety Failures

A fire broke out at a hotel in a crowded building in Kolkata early Wednesday.

Nine people died.

The building contained many small hotels packed into an old structure.

Reports said it had no fire alarms and many windows were blocked by iron grills.

Loose wires and a blocked fire exit were also reported.

Iron stairs became hot, making it harder for people to escape.

Local residents said officials should have noticed these dangers earlier.

Government ministers promised an investigation and said unsafe hotels may be shut down.
