Trump Unveils White House Helipad as Granite Work of Art
Donald Trump showed a new landing area for the presidential helicopter at the White House.
He said it looks beautiful and is made from black-and-white granite.
The granite came from a quarry in California.
A large presidential symbol was built into the landing area.
Trump said the project cost less than expected and was paid for by Sikorsky Aircraft.
The first estimate was about $6 million.
The Washington Post reported that the cost may have risen during construction.
While the helipad was being repaired, Marine One used another nearby location called The Ellipse.
Officials reported communication and visibility problems involving that temporary arrangement.
Donald Trump showcased the newly upgraded White House helipad and called it “a work of art.”
The project replaced asphalt with four-inch black-and-white granite slabs and a 100-foot presidential insignia.
Trump said the work finished ahead of schedule, under budget, and was funded by Sikorsky Aircraft.
Initial cost projections were $6 million, but The Washington Post reported expenses may have increased.
Marine One temporarily used The Ellipse, where air-traffic communication and visibility concerns were reported.
