Finland, Sweden Jointly Intercept Russian Aircraft Over Gulf
Finland and Sweden sent fighter jets to look at a group of Russian military aircraft.
This happened over the Gulf of Finland, in international airspace.
The group included a transport plane and several fighter jets.
It was the first time Finland and Sweden carried out this kind of operation together.
The two countries use a system called Quick Reaction Alert to respond quickly to possible concerns.
Sweden’s prime minister said the mission showed that the countries trust and cooperate with each other.
The Baltic Sea area has been especially watchful since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
Russian embassies in Sweden and Finland had not commented when Reuters asked them.
