Bangladesh to Hold General Elections and Referendum in February 2026
Imagine Bangladesh is getting ready to choose new leaders, like picking class representatives.
But before they do, they also want to vote on some big changes to the country's rules, kind of like changing the school's rules.
These new rules are written down in something called the 'July Charter.'
The leader, Mr. Yunus, and his team have decided that people will vote on these rule changes at the same time they vote for their leaders, which will happen in February 2026.
This 'July Charter' has many ideas for making things fairer, like changes to how elections work.
Lots of different political groups signed up to this idea.
However, not everyone agrees on *when* the vote on the new rules should happen.
Some want it on the same day as the leader election, while others want it sooner.
Even though they signed the charter, some groups still disagree on many of the specific changes.
The government is moving forward with the plan to hold the vote on the charter and the elections together.
Bangladesh's interim leader Muhammad Yunus announced a referendum on the 'July Charter Implementation Order, 2025' and national elections will be held in February 2026.
The July Charter is a 26-point document created after the July 2024 revolution, detailing constitutional, electoral, and political reforms with over 80 proposals.
The charter was signed by 30 political parties and the interim government on October 17, 2025.
Political parties have differing views on the timing of the referendum, with some wanting it on election day and others by November.
Despite signing the July Charter, consensus has not been reached on many of its proposed reforms among the political parties.
