8th Pay Commission: Government Wage Trends
The government is thinking about how much to pay its employees with the 8th Pay Commission.
Right now, the average government worker makes about ₹9 lakh per year, which is about five times what an average person in India earns.
This ratio has stayed pretty much the same for the last 20 years.
Both government salaries and the average person's income have grown at about the same rate, around 10% per year.
There was a time when the ratio was a bit lower, around 4 times, but it went back up.
So, the government's pay for its workers has kept up with how much people in the country are earning.
Average central government employee remuneration in FY23 was around ₹9 lakh.
Per capita GNI in FY23 was around ₹194,000, making the ratio of average pay to GNI about 5 times.
The ratio of average pay to GNI has remained stable over the last two decades, except for a dip below 4 times in FY06-07.
Between FY2000 and FY2023, average pay grew at a 10.6% CAGR, closely matching the 10.4% CAGR in per capita GNI.
The upcoming 8th Pay Commission recommendations are eagerly awaited to see how government employee salaries might change.
