Manipur violence leaves 306 dead, 49 missing since 2023

Manipur has experienced serious ethnic violence since May 2023.

The violence began between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo-Hmar communities.

The government says at least 306 people have died and 49 are missing.

About 60,000 people had to leave their homes.

Of these, 36,000 have been resettled, while 24,000 are still living in relief camps.

The violence disrupted ordinary life across the state.

Manipur was governed under President’s Rule for a year after N Biren Singh stepped down.

Yumnam Khemchand Singh became chief minister in February 2026.
