Nepal Flash Flood Prompts High Alerts Across Bihar, Uttar Pradesh
A sudden flood hit Nepal near the Tibet border on Wednesday.
It swept through villages and damaged roads, bridges, buildings and power facilities.
At least eight or nine deaths were reported, but different reports gave different numbers.
Many travelers and some security workers were still missing.
Rescue teams, soldiers, police and helicopters were searching for people.
The water moved into rivers connected to the Gandak system, which flows into India.
Bihar opened the gates of the Gandak Barrage and prepared to move people if needed.
Uttar Pradesh warned officials in two districts to stay ready.
Officials were still investigating exactly what caused the flood.
A flash flood struck Nepal’s Rasuwa district around 8:30–9 a.m. Wednesday, damaging villages, roads, bridges, police facilities and hydropower infrastructure.
Reports put the confirmed death toll at at least eight or nine, while one headline said 16 and another report mentioned nearly 100; the toll remains provisional and inconsistent.
The Nepal Tourism Board said 384 travelers’ whereabouts were unconfirmed, including 291 foreign nationals, 93 Nepali nationals and 105 Indian nationals; 37 NRIs were also being verified.
Nepali authorities deployed the army, police, Armed Police Force, helicopters and relief groups, while reports differed on the number of missing security personnel.
Because floodwater entered river systems flowing toward India, Bihar opened all 36 Gandak Barrage gates and prepared monitoring, evacuations and emergency response; Uttar Pradesh alerted Maharajganj and Kushinagar.
