Mumbai Faces Shelter Shortage Amidst Supreme Court Stray Dog Order
The Supreme Court told Mumbai to move stray dogs from places like schools and hospitals to special homes called shelters.
These dogs also need to get shots and be made healthy first.
But, officials in Mumbai said they only have eight shelters for over 90,000 stray dogs!
They also used to let dogs go after they got their shots, but the new order means they have to stay in shelters for their whole lives.
This will require many more shelters and staff.
Even though Mumbai has a program to control the number of stray dogs, they still have a lot.
The court said these dog attacks are a big problem showing that officials aren't doing enough.
Mumbai needs to figure out how to build more shelters and take care of thousands of dogs.
Mumbai has over 90,000 stray dogs but only eight designated shelters, posing a challenge to the Supreme Court's relocation order.
The Supreme Court directed the immediate relocation of stray dogs from institutional areas to shelters after sterilization and vaccination.
BMC officials stated that existing shelters are insufficient, as they previously released sterilized dogs rather than housing them permanently.
Implementing the order will require significantly enhanced shelter capacity, including handlers, veterinarians, and provisions for food and water.
Mumbai has an established Animal Birth Control program, but the stray dog population remains substantial, necessitating further measures to comply with the court's directive.
