Congress Protest Highlights Sharp Sugar Price Rise in Madhya Pradesh

Congress workers in Piplia Mandi protested rising prices by giving people small packets of sugar.

They said inflation is making life harder for poor and middle-class families.

Reports said sugar now costs about Rs 75-80 per kilogram, compared with Rs 40-45 four months earlier.

Jaggery prices also increased.

Tea sellers said higher costs may force them to reduce portions or raise prices.

Traders blamed ethanol production, low supplies and festive demand.

Some consumers suspected that large businesses were holding back sugar.

The government imposed stock limits and allowed duty-free imports, but prices were still reported to be rising.
