Plassey Battle Marks Start of British Rule in India 268 Years Ago

In 1757, a battle called Plassey happened in India.

The British, who wanted to trade, fought against an Indian ruler.

The British won because one of the Indian ruler's commanders, Mir Jafar, betrayed him.

This win let the British take over India.

They ruled for nearly 200 years, and they could collect taxes, using the money to build up their army and expanding their power.

The betrayal changed history and led to colonial rule.
