Bihar Court Convicts Police Officer of Contempt, Imposes Re 1 Fine

A court in Bihar had told a senior police officer to take certain steps in a kidnapping case.

The court said the officer, Raushan Kumar, did not properly follow those instructions.

It also said he did not answer a notice or appear to give evidence when asked.

The court found him guilty of contempt, which means disobeying or disrespecting the court’s authority.

It fined him just one rupee, but ordered that the fine come from his salary.

The court also said the conviction should be added to his work record.

It asked the government ministry responsible for personnel and training to improve how IAS and IPS officers are trained.

The court said this training should fit with a democratic system.
