India Allows Limited Organic Sugar Exports
India has decided to let some organic sugar be sent to other countries.
They are allowing up to 50,000 tonnes of organic sugar to be exported each year.
This is a special kind of sugar that is made from organically grown sugarcane and is very popular in places like the US and Europe.
The government wants to help farmers and companies that make this sugar to sell it abroad, but they also want to make sure there is enough sugar for people in India.
This is part of a bigger plan to help India sell more high-quality food products to other countries.
The organic sugar market is growing fast, and the government is supporting farmers to grow more organic food.
India has allowed the export of organic sugar under HS codes 17011490 and 17019990 with an annual ceiling of 50,000 tonnes.
The move partially relaxes restrictions imposed in October 2023 when organic sugar exports were placed under the 'restricted' category.
Organic sugar accounts for a small share of India's overall sugar output but commands higher prices and faces steady demand in global markets.
The government aims to differentiate between bulk sugar exports and niche, premium segments like organic sugar to manage domestic supplies effectively.
The decision aligns with India's strategy to encourage exports of higher-value agricultural products while maintaining caution on bulk commodity shipments.
