US Tightens REAL ID Rules for Domestic Travel

US Tightens REAL ID Rules for Domestic Travel

Starting February 1, people flying within the US will need a REAL ID or another accepted ID like a passport.

If they don't have one, they'll have to pay $45 to prove who they are.

A REAL ID is a special kind of ID that's harder to fake.

You can get one from your state's DMV.

If you're flying internationally, you'll still need a passport book.

A passport card works for domestic flights but not for international ones.

Some states give out IDs that aren't REAL ID compliant, but these can't be used for flying or entering federal buildings.

The government says not to assume someone is undocumented just because they have a noncompliant ID.
