India-EU Conclude Historic Free Trade Agreement
India and the European Union (EU) have finished talking about a big trade deal called a Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
This deal has been in the works for 18 years and was finalized on January 27, 2026.
The agreement will cut import duties on things like textiles, footwear, cars, and wines.
It will also make it easier to trade services like telecommunications and transportation.
Both sides have been negotiating toughly, but they are almost done.
The EU and India will also explore working together on defence.
This deal is very important because it will create a huge market of nearly two billion people and help both sides' economies grow.
The EU leaders even attended India's Republic Day celebrations to show how important this partnership is.
During the Republic Day parade, India showcased its military strength with advanced weapons and cultural heritage through tableaux and traditional attire.
Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, wore a special Indian outfit made of Banarasi brocade, which is a traditional fabric known for its intricate designs.
This outfit was designed by a famous Indian designer, Rajesh Pratap Singh.
The parade also featured a tableau celebrating Indian cinema, curated by filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
The event highlighted India's growing military capabilities and cultural richness, making it a memorable occasion for both India and the EU.
India and the EU concluded negotiations for a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on January 27, 2026, after 18 years of talks.
The FTA includes import duty cuts on textiles, footwear, cars, wines, and liberalization of service sectors, with 9,425 tariff lines opened for Indian goods.
India advocated for zero-duty access in labour-intensive sectors like textiles, leather, apparel, gems, and jewellery, while the EU pressed for lower tariffs on cars and alcoholic beverages.
The FTA covers 24 chapters, including trade in goods and services, and will be accompanied by agreements on investment protection and Geographical Indications (GI).
During the Republic Day celebrations, India showcased its military might with advanced weapons like the DRDO’s Long Range Anti-Ship Hypersonic Missile (LR-AShM) and the Universal Rocket Launcher System (URLS) Suryastra.
