US-Venezuela Oil Deal Targets Reserves and China’s Influence

US-Venezuela Oil Deal Targets Reserves and China’s Influence

The United States is helping arrange a new oil company in Venezuela.

The company would work across 17 oil fields with about 65 billion barrels of proven reserves.

The US government would own 35% of the company.

US buyers could also purchase 20% of its oil at cost, rather than paying an extra market premium.

Alejandro Betancourt would be involved in the venture, although he has faced past corruption accusations.

US officials say he is a capable operator who has helped the government before.

China has lent Venezuela billions of dollars and has received oil in return.

The deal could reduce China’s role in Venezuela and increase tensions between China and the United States.
