Madhya Pradesh Plans Statewide Stray Dog Shelters
The government of Madhya Pradesh is planning to build new homes and centers for stray dogs in every district.
This is because there are too many stray dogs, and only about half of them have been vaccinated.
The plan includes building shelters, centers to control dog births, and providing food and medical care.
However, the government is worried about the high cost.
There are already some shelters and centers, but they might not be enough if the number of dogs keeps growing.
The Supreme Court is also involved in this issue.
Madhya Pradesh plans to establish shelter homes and expand ABC centres in every district, with an estimated cost of Rs. 480 crore.
The initiative aims to address the growing stray dog population, with over 10 lakh stray dogs in the state, and only 52.3% vaccinated.
Each district will have at least one shelter home, with larger districts potentially having four to five facilities.
The plan includes infrastructure for shelters, ABC centres, food, veterinary services, and operational facilities, but funding is a major challenge.
Currently, Madhya Pradesh has 12 shelter homes and 19 ABC centres, with recent expansions in Rewa, Gwalior, and Burhanpur.
