India’s August Goods Exports Surge as Trade Deficit Narrows
India sold many more goods to other countries in August than it did a year earlier.
Its exports grew faster than its imports, helping reduce the monthly trade gap.
The articles give slightly different figures for the exact value of exports and imports.
They agree that exports grew by 26.12 per cent and imports by 14.1 per cent.
Engineering goods, fuel products, chemicals and textiles helped increase exports.
Buyers included the United States, European Union and BRICS countries.
Gold imports fell sharply, which also helped narrow the deficit.
India also built record foreign-exchange reserves that can give the Reserve Bank of India more room to support the rupee.
August merchandise exports rose 26.12 per cent, although sources differed on the value, reporting either USD 43.18 billion or USD 43.81 billion.
Imports increased 14.1 per cent, with sources reporting either USD 72.67 billion or USD 70.76 billion.
The August merchandise trade deficit was USD 26.86 billion, below July’s roughly USD 32 billion and the year-earlier figure of about USD 27.20 billion.
Engineering goods, petroleum products, chemicals and textiles drove exports, with demand reported from the US, EU, BRICS nations and emerging economies.
India’s foreign-exchange reserves rose by USD 44.9 billion to a record USD 785.7 billion, making it the fourth-largest reserve holder, according to Bloomberg data.
