Sovereign Gold Bond Maturation Yields Over 300% Return
Imagine you bought a special IOU from the government that was linked to the price of gold, called a Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB).
On November 6, 2025, these IOUs matured after eight years.
The government paid back the investors the final price, which was based on the average price of gold over the few days before maturity.
For the SGB 2017-18 Series VI, the government paid back ₹12,066 for every gram that was originally bought.
This was a big jump from the price when it was first sold in 2017.
If someone bought it for ₹2,945 per gram, they got back much more than three times their initial investment just from the price increase, plus they received a small yearly payment of 2.5% interest for all those years.
This means investing in these bonds was a much better deal than just buying gold to keep at home because you also got that extra interest.
The government has sold many of these bonds over the years to encourage people to invest in gold in a safe way.
The Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) 2017–18 Series VI matured on November 6, 2025, with a redemption price of ₹12,066 per gram.
Investors saw a price return of approximately 309% over eight years, excluding the 2.5% annual interest.
The redemption price was calculated based on the average closing price of gold over the three business days preceding maturity.
SGBs offer an alternative to physical gold, providing sovereign backing and an annual interest payment.
The government has mobilized approximately 146.96 tonnes of gold through SGBs till March 31, 2025.
