CBI Books Jai Ambani in Rs 228 Crore Fraud Case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has accused Jai Anmol Anil Ambani, the son of industrialist Anil Ambani, and two other directors of Reliance Home Finance Ltd.
(RHFL) of cheating Union Bank of India.
The bank says the company took a loan of Rs 450 crore but did not pay it back on time.
The account was then marked as a non-performing asset (NPA).
A detailed check of the company's accounts showed that the money was used for things other than what the loan was meant for.
The bank claims that the accused people misused the funds and did not follow the rules.
The CBI conducted searches at the residences of the accused and seized several incriminating documents.
This is the first time Jai Ambani has been directly involved in such a case, though his father has been investigated before for similar issues.
The CBI has booked Jai Anmol Anil Ambani and Reliance Home Finance Ltd. (RHFL) for alleged cheating of Rs 228 crore with Union Bank of India.
The company availed a credit limit of Rs 450 crore from the bank's SCF branch in Mumbai for business needs.
The account was classified as a non-performing asset (NPA) on September 30, 2019, due to non-repayment of instalments.
A forensic examination by Grant Thornton revealed that borrowed funds were mis-apportioned and diverted for purposes other than those for which the finance was extended.
The bank alleged that the accused persons committed fraudulent misappropriation of funds through manipulation of accounts and criminal breach of trust.
