Trump Seeks Supreme Court to Overturn $83M Defamation Verdict
Donald Trump is asking the Supreme Court to cancel a big money award that was given to a woman named E. Jean Carroll.
Carroll says Trump sexually assaulted her in 1996 and that he made false statements about her.
Trump says he can't be sued for what he said while he was president.
The court has already said no to a similar request for a smaller award.
Now the case is back in front of the Supreme Court.
Trump and the Justice Department ask the Supreme Court to dismiss an $83 million defamation verdict against him.
The verdict was awarded to writer E. Jean Carroll after she alleged Trump sexually assaulted her in 1996.
Trump claims presidential immunity and the Westfall Act shield him from civil liability for statements made while in office.
The Supreme Court previously denied Trump’s appeal of a $5 million verdict for similar claims.
The case centers on Trump’s 2019 comments denying knowledge of Carroll and attacking her motives.
