Fish Farmers Criticise Pebbair Information Centre as Defunct
Fish farmers raise a stink over defunct information centre · thehansindia.com

A centre in Pebbair was set up to help fish farmers.

Farmers say many people do not know about it and that it does not give them the information and advice they need.

They want help with fish farming, pond care, government schemes and subsidies.

Local people also object to college staff vehicles being parked on the premises.

Chintakayala Kurumurthy said the fisheries college held a couple of awareness sessions last year.

He wants the centre made operational and farmers told about available support.

Dr Sakaram says the facility is meant for diagnosing fish diseases.

He said tests are done when farmers visit, but awareness programmes have not been held there.

Quotes

Chintakayala Kurumurthy

Mandal president of the fisheries cooperative society.

“Farmers are unaware of the existence of the centre. Last year, the fisheries college conducted a couple of awareness sessions for farmers on fish farming and pond management. The centre needs to be made operational. Awareness must be created regarding the government schemes and subsidies available; efforts should be made for their uplift.”

“The facility is strictly a diagnostic centre; it was set up because the main college campus is quite far away. Tests are conducted there whenever farmers visit, but awareness programmes or similar activities have never been held there. Since I arrived only last year, I am not aware of these matters.”
