Few Multi-State Co-Operative Credit Societies Eligible for UCB Conversion
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has proposed strict rules for converting large multi-state co-operative credit societies (MSCCS) into urban co-operative banks (UCBs).
Only a few MSCCS, like Buldana Urban Co-operative Credit Society, Lokmanya Multipurpose Cooperative Society, and Shri Beereshwar Co-Op Credit Society, might meet these rules.
These societies have large amounts of money in deposits and loans.
The RBI wants to make sure that only strong and well-established societies can become UCBs.
This is because, in the past, many UCBs became financially unstable soon after they were created.
The RBI is now considering opening up licensing for new UCBs because the banking sector has improved over the last 20 years.
However, experts think that very few societies will be able to meet the strict conditions set by the RBI.
Only a few large multi-state co-operative credit societies (MSCCS) may be eligible for conversion into urban co-operative banks (UCBs) due to strict RBI criteria.
Eligible MSCCS include Buldana Urban Co-operative Credit Society, Lokmanya Multipurpose Cooperative Society, and Shri Beereshwar Co-Op Credit Society.
RBI proposes licensing only large co-operative credit societies with at least 10 years of active operations and a good financial track record of at least five years.
Minimum capital requirement for UCB license is ₹300 crore.
RBI paused UCB licensing in 2004 due to 31% of issued licenses becoming financially unsound.
