China Dismisses Taiwan's Safety Concerns for APEC Summit
Imagine two friends, China and Taiwan, who have a disagreement about how they should be treated.
Taiwan is going to be a guest at a big meeting hosted by China next year called APEC.
Taiwan is worried about feeling safe at the meeting and wants to make sure they are treated fairly, just like any other guest.
They also want to make sure all the other guests are treated well too.
China says there's nothing to worry about and that everyone will be safe.
However, China also says that for Taiwan to be a guest, they must agree to China's rule that Taiwan is part of China.
Taiwan doesn't agree with this rule, and this disagreement has made things difficult between them.
In the past, Taiwan has had problems attending these meetings because of this disagreement.
China's foreign ministry dismissed safety concerns raised by Taiwan regarding its hosting of the 2026 APEC summit.
Taiwan stated its participation in APEC hinges on China providing written assurances about safety and equal treatment for all attendees.
China emphasized that Taiwan's participation is conditional on adhering to the 'one China' principle and APEC's memorandum of understanding.
The APEC summit is scheduled to be held in Shenzhen, China, in November 2026.
Relations between China and Taiwan have been strained, with China viewing Taiwan as a breakaway province and Taiwan rejecting Beijing's sovereignty claims.
