Kerala High Court upholds bribery conviction of public official

The Kerala High Court has upheld the conviction of a public official who accepted a bribe of Rs 1,000.

The court ruled that even if a government employee accepts money when it is offered, it still counts as bribery.

The official, an assistant engineer, was originally sentenced to two years in prison but the court reduced it to six months.

The court said that accepting money without demanding it is still illegal and public servants will not be shown leniency.

The evidence included the complainant's testimony and a chemical test that confirmed the money was tainted.
