Parandur Airport Scrapping Raises Investor Confidence and Chennai Capacity Concerns

Parandur Airport Scrapping Raises Investor Confidence and Chennai Capacity Concerns

Tamil Nadu planned to build a second airport near Chennai at Parandur.

The plan would have used about 5,000 acres of land.

People in nearby villages protested because they feared losing homes, farms, water bodies, and their way of life.

Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has now cancelled the Parandur plan.

The government says Chennai still needs another airport because the city is an important industrial centre.

It wants to find a different site closer to Chennai that would affect fewer people and farms.

Critics say cancelling the project may make investors worry that government decisions can change after elections.

The government has not said exactly what will happen to the 1,700 acres already acquired.
