Diabetes Care Must Address Different Risks in Men and Women

Type 2 diabetes can cause many health problems, not just high blood sugar.

A study in England looked at nearly 30,000 people with the disease.

Men more often developed heart problems and severe kidney disease.

These problems also tended to happen earlier in men.

Women more often developed anxiety, depression and other mental-health conditions.

High blood pressure was the most common problem for everyone.

The researchers said that some differences in mental-health diagnoses may be linked to how readily people seek care.

Studies from India suggest that many people with diabetes also experience depression or anxiety.

This means diabetes care may need to look after both the body and the mind.
