Metro Deposit and Credit Growth Contracts in H1 FY26
In the first half of the financial year 2026, big cities in India saw a decrease in the amount of money people were putting into banks and the amount of loans banks were giving out.
This is because people in these cities are choosing to invest their money in other ways, like stocks and mutual funds, instead of keeping it in banks.
Meanwhile, in smaller towns and rural areas, the amount of money going into banks and the number of loans given out increased a lot.
This shows that people in different parts of India are making different choices about how to manage their money.
Even though big cities are still important for banking, the trend is changing, and this shift might be here to stay.
Deposit growth in metros contracted by 34% to ₹3.4 lakh crore year-on-year in H1 FY26.
Credit growth in metros contracted by 14% to ₹3.6 lakh crore year-on-year in H1 FY26.
Semi-urban areas saw a 68% increase in bank deposits and a 20% increase in bank credit.
Rural areas experienced a 40% increase in bank deposits and a 28% increase in bank credit.
Metros still hold 42% of deposits and 48% of credit nationwide, despite the decline in growth.
