World's largest battery-powered aircraft completes successful maiden flight
A very big airplane that runs only on batteries just flew for the first time.
It is called the X1 and was made by a company called Heart Aerospace.
This airplane is about the size of a small passenger plane and can seat 30 people.
It weighs more than an empty school bus.
The X1 flew for 27 minutes and went about 1,100 feet into the air.
Only a pilot was inside the plane during the test.
This is the largest battery-powered airplane that has ever flown.
People are excited because it shows electric flying might be possible one day.
But batteries are still very heavy, and the plane cannot fly very far yet.
So it will be a while before we can all fly in electric planes.
Heart Aerospace's X1, the world's largest fully battery-powered aircraft, completed its maiden flight.
The 30-seat test aircraft flew for 27 minutes on battery power alone.
The flight took place at a regional airport in upstate New York.
The X1 has a 106-foot wingspan, measures 76 feet nose to tail, and weighs more than 25,000 pounds.
Range and battery weight remain major challenges for fully electric commercial aviation.
The X1 is a demonstrator for Heart Aerospace's planned ES-30 hybrid-electric regional aircraft.
