Gauhati High Court Questions Assam Demolition Drive on Private Land

Gauhati High Court Questions Assam Demolition Drive on Private Land

Officials in Assam demolished 21 homes built on agricultural land in Goalpara.

The residents said they were given only 24 hours to remove their houses.

The Gauhati high court questioned whether the demolition was lawful.

It said the evidence did not clearly show an immediate danger.

The court also questioned whether officials misused the Disaster Management Act.

The administration said the homes were built without completing the required land-use process.

Officials said the drive was meant to protect farmland, water bodies and drainage channels.

The court has temporarily stopped further action against the petitioners' lands.

It will later decide whether the demolitions were legal and whether compensation is owed.
