Ferry fire off Lombok kills one, over 200 rescued
A big boat called KM Putri Yasmin was carrying people from one Indonesian island, Bali, to another island called Lombok.
Early in the morning, the boat caught fire in the water.
Rescue workers rushed out in boats and brought more than 200 people to safety.
Sadly, one person died in the accident.
Most of the people saved were from Indonesia, and one person was from Australia.
The boat's official list said there were only 114 passengers, but many more people were actually on board.
No one knows yet exactly why the fire started or if the boat had too many people.
This was not the first boat fire in Indonesia recently, because another ferry caught fire less than a month ago and five people died.
Indonesia is made up of many islands, and people often travel by ferry, but sometimes safety rules are not followed carefully.
The ferry KM Putri Yasmin caught fire in the Lombok Strait off Indonesia's Lombok island early Wednesday morning.
One Indonesian passenger was confirmed dead and 212 people were evacuated to ports in Bali and Lombok.
The ferry was travelling from Padangbai port in Bali to Lembar port on Lombok when the fire broke out at 4:39 a.m. local time.
The official manifest listed only 114 passengers and 17 crew, far fewer than the 212 people rescued; the fire's cause remains unclear.
The incident follows a ferry fire off Madura island less than a month earlier that killed five people, underscoring Indonesia's ferry safety concerns.
