Why more non-smokers in India are developing lung cancer

For a long time, doctors thought lung cancer mostly happened to people who smoke.

Now doctors in India are seeing many patients with lung cancer who never smoked.

In some Indian hospitals, about 4 or 5 out of every 10 lung cancer patients are non-smokers.

One big reason may be dirty air, because tiny pollution particles can hurt our lungs.

Cooking with certain fuels in rooms without fresh air, and breathing other people's smoke, can also be risky.

Some jobs where people breathe dust, like asbestos or silica, can raise the risk too.

Sometimes the instructions inside our bodies can make a person more likely to get lung cancer even without smoking.

Many non-smokers do not think they can get lung cancer, so they wait too long to see a doctor.

Smoking is still the biggest cause, but doctors say everyone should pay attention to their lungs and get checked early.

If someone has a cough that will not go away or feels very tired, they should visit a doctor.
