UPSC Key Covers India-China Ties, Space, Mercury and Governance
This UPSC current-affairs key discusses several important national and international issues.
China’s President Xi Jinping is expected to visit India for the BRICS meeting and may speak with Prime Minister Modi about improving relations.
India and France are working together on space exploration and space safety.
Scientists say Mercury is becoming smaller as its hot interior slowly cools.
In India, women make up a very large share of informal workers in some districts, especially in the south and northeast.
Bihar flooded even though it had received less rain than usual because water came from upstream areas and the Ganga rose sharply.
A river’s backwater effect can make it harder for tributaries to drain into a swollen main river.
Manipur wants to use 1951 as a reference year for a possible citizens’ register.
Some groups support this, while others worry that old and incomplete records could wrongly exclude people.
Xi Jinping is expected to attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12-13 and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
India and France are expanding space cooperation, while India targets an indigenous space station by 2035 and a crewed Moon mission by 2040.
A study says Mercury may have contracted up to 14.5 miles in diameter, more than earlier estimates, because its interior has cooled.
MoSPI data shows women constitute 78% of informal workers in Telangana’s Nirmal district, compared with an all-India average of 29%.
Bihar’s flooding occurred despite seasonal rainfall deficits, while Manipur’s proposed 1951 NRC baseline faces political, legal and documentation concerns.

Supporters’ Arguments
Critics’ Concerns
India-China engagement
Supporters’ Arguments
Supporters see Xi’s visit, strategic economic dialogue and border-management discussions as opportunities to rebuild trust and stabilise bilateral relations.
Critics’ Concerns
Critics point to unresolved issues including troop deployments along the Line of Actual Control, trade and market-access imbalances, visa restrictions, river-data concerns and Chinese activities in India.
BRICS’ purpose
Supporters’ Arguments
China and Russia increasingly view BRICS as a counterweight to Western dominance, US-led institutions and dollar hegemony, while supporters present it as a stronger voice for the Global South.
Critics’ Concerns
The grouping faces internal disagreement over whether it should primarily promote economic cooperation or become a geopolitical counterweight, potentially limiting consensus among its members.
Manipur NRC baseline
Supporters’ Arguments
Proponents argue that 1951 is the logical reference point because Manipur’s permit system was abolished in 1950 and a 1951 NRC was prepared, allowing later demographic changes to be examined.
Critics’ Concerns
The Kuki-Zo Council and other critics argue that 1951 records may be incomplete, especially in remote hill areas, and that the baseline could exclude long-settled or indigenous residents unable to produce historical documents.
