Global Government Debt Projections for 2026: US Leads in Total Debt

Global Government Debt Projections for 2026: US Leads in Total Debt

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected government debt for 2026.

The United States will have the highest total debt at $40.7 trillion, which is more than the combined debt of China, Japan, the UK, and France.

However, when looking at debt as a percentage of GDP, Japan tops the list with 204.4%.

This shows that Japan's debt is very high compared to its economy.

Other countries like Singapore, Sudan, and Italy also have high debt-to-GDP ratios.

The US, despite having the highest total debt, ranks lower in debt-to-GDP at 125.8%.

India has $3.5 trillion in debt but does not feature among the highest debt-to-GDP countries, meaning its debt is lower relative to its economy.

The data helps us understand how different countries manage their debt.
