SEBI Overhauls Stockbroker Rules After 30 Years
SEBI, the market regulator in India, has updated its old rules for stockbrokers.
These new rules, called the SEBI (Stock Brokers) Regulations, 2026, make it easier for brokers to follow the rules and do business.
The new rules are simpler and clearer, with some old rules removed and new definitions added.
Brokers can now do some activities under the rules of other financial regulators.
The new rules also allow for joint inspections and keeping records electronically.
This change was approved by SEBI's board in December and aims to make the rules easier to understand and follow.
SEBI has overhauled its stockbroker regulations, replacing the 1992 rules with the SEBI (Stock Brokers) Regulations, 2026.
The new regulations simplify regulatory language, remove outdated provisions, and introduce clearer definitions.
Stockbrokers can now carry out activities under the regulatory framework of other financial sector regulators.
The new rules allow for joint inspections and the maintenance of books of accounts in electronic form.
SEBI has removed obsolete provisions, such as those related to the physical delivery of shares and the Forward Market Commission.
