Cinema Body Urges Karnataka To Reconsider 2% Ticket Cess

Cinema Body Urges Karnataka To Reconsider 2% Ticket Cess

Karnataka has introduced a 2% extra charge on cinema tickets.

The charge will apply to both multiplexes and single-screen theaters.

The government’s notification says it will begin on September 30.

The Multiplex Association of India wants the government to reconsider the decision.

It says a Rs 300 ticket could become about Rs 6 more expensive because of the cess.

The association also says GST may be charged on the cess.

It believes this could create a tax-on-tax effect.

The association is considering ways to challenge the levy while remaining open to discussions with the government.
