U.S. Grant Program Excludes French Groups Over Election Interference Concerns

The United States has a grant program that gives large amounts of money to European organizations.

The organizations can work on free speech, human rights, democracy and other political issues.

Two sources say French groups will not be allowed to receive the money.

France is worried that foreign money could affect its presidential election next April-May.

Some people also worry that the grants could support groups close to President Donald Trump's political views.

One French organization said it applied for $1 million for anti-censorship and free-speech work.

It said officials told the organization that French applicants would be excluded.

The United States says the grant decisions are still being considered.

The disagreement is adding to already strained relations between the two countries.
