How Five Indian Rivers Were Brought Back to Life

How Five Indian Rivers Were Brought Back to Life

Five rivers in India had become very weak, polluted or dry.

Different communities used different ways to help them recover.

In Rajasthan, villagers built structures to collect rainwater and refill underground water.

In Maharashtra, workers reduced sewage and waste entering the Kham River.

In Chhattisgarh, people studied the entire Sakri River and then built check dams, cleared silt and treated sewage.

In Tamil Nadu, women helped build wells and barriers so rainwater could soak into the ground and restore the Naganadhi.

In Kerala, workers removed weeds, plastic and layers of mud from the Kuttemperoor River.

These examples show that restoring a river also means repairing the land, water systems and communities around it.

The Sakri’s later problems also show that rivers need continued care after restoration.
