NRL to Process Imported Crude by Year-End
Numaligarh Refinery Ltd (NRL) is expanding its refinery to process more oil.
Currently, it processes 3 million tonnes of oil per year, but after the expansion, it will be able to process 9 million tonnes.
This expansion includes a new unit to process imported oil, which will come through a pipeline from Paradip Port in Odisha.
The project also includes a new unit to make a type of plastic called polypropylene.
NRL will use this expanded capacity to meet the growing demand for fuels like petrol and diesel in the East and Northeast regions of India.
Additionally, NRL is building a small plant to make bioethanol from bamboo.
The expansion is expected to be completed by the end of 2023, with the entire project finished by December 2026.
NRL's capacity expansion to 9 million tonnes per annum is on track for commercial completion by the end of 2023.
The project involves a 6 million tonnes per annum Crude Distillation Unit and a 360,000 tonnes Poly Propylene Unit.
Imported crude oil will be sourced through Paradip Port in Odisha and transported via a 1,640 km pipeline.
NRL has an MoU with BPCL for crude oil sourcing and will process over 100 crude assays.
The expansion aims to meet growing fuel demand in East and Northeast regions and catalyze downstream industries.
