Trump Tariffs Drive Essar’s $18 Billion U.S. Steel Plan

Trump Tariffs Drive Essar’s $18 Billion U.S. Steel Plan

Essar Group, an Indian company, wants to build a very large steel plant in Iowa.

The plant would use iron ore from a mine operated by its subsidiary, Mesabi Metallics, in Minnesota.

This would create a supply chain that starts at a U.S. mine and ends at a U.S. steel mill.

The entire project is expected to cost about $18 billion, including roughly $15 billion for the Iowa plant.

The plant could eventually make up to 10 million tonnes of steel each year.

Its first phase is expected to produce about 7.5 million tonnes annually, beginning around 2030.

The project could create thousands of construction and permanent jobs.

U.S. officials say the 50% tariff on imported steel encouraged Essar to manufacture in the United States.

Critics of foreign dependence, including Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, say the project could reduce reliance on imported iron-ore pellets.
