Telangana Rohith Vemula Bill Remains Pending Amid Campus Discrimination Concerns

Telangana is considering a law to protect college students from discrimination based on their identity.

The proposal is named after Rohith Vemula, whose death in 2016 led to protests about discrimination at the University of Hyderabad.

The proposal has not yet been introduced in the state Assembly.

A government committee is still reviewing it and collecting opinions.

Supporters say a law would make universities take complaints more seriously.

They also want complaint investigations to be independent and completed within set time limits.

Some groups want the law to protect OBC students as well as SC and ST students.

Others say education and regular awareness programs are also needed to reduce prejudice.

The issue gained fresh attention after the death by suicide of IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode on September 18.
