India Engages Stakeholders Over Chabahar Port After US Waiver Ends
India is working with people who have a stake in a big port in Iran called Chabahar.
The U.S. had a special permission that let India help build the port, but that permission ended on April 26, 2024.
Because of that, the Indian government is talking to everyone involved to figure out what to do next.
India has already paid $120 million to the Iranian port authority, and the last payment was made in August 2025.
The port is run by an Indian company that started in 2018.
The main goal of the port is to give Afghanistan a way to trade and help India trade with Central Asia.
The Indian government wants to keep the project going even after the U.S. permission ends.
They are making sure all parties are on the same page.
This helps both India and Afghanistan grow their economies.
US sanctions waiver for Chabahar Port ended on April 26, 2024, prompting India to consult stakeholders.
India Ports Global Limited, via its subsidiary, has operated the port since 2018.
India has paid $120 million to Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organisation under a 2024 contract, final payment in August 2025.
The project aims to give Afghanistan connectivity and boost India‑Central Asia trade links.
The Indian government remains engaged with stakeholders to manage implications of the waiver’s expiration.
