Cambodia Vows No Safe Haven for Online Scams

Cambodia hosted a meeting about stopping online scams.

Prime Minister Hun Manet said criminal groups will not be allowed to use Cambodia as a safe place.

These groups have operated large compounds where some people were reportedly forced to scam others.

Cambodian officials say they have closed hundreds of compounds and deported many people.

The United States says Americans lost more than $10 billion to scams operating in the region in 2024.

Some experts and opposition figures doubt that Cambodia’s crackdown has reached powerful people.

They also say scam groups may be splitting into smaller teams or moving to other countries.

United Nations officials said countries need to share information and work together more effectively.
