Deori community demands Sixth Schedule inclusion
The Deori community in India wants to be included in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
This schedule gives certain tribes special rights to manage their own land and resources.
The Deoris are already recognized as a Scheduled Tribe, but they want their council, called the Deori Autonomous Council (DAC), to have more power.
They say this will help them protect their culture and resources.
They also mentioned that other tribes like the Bodos, Karbis, and Dimasas have similar rights, and they should too.
Meanwhile, the Assam government is inviting the Deori community to discuss the report in detail, assuring that the report is designed to grant ST status to the six communities without impacting current tribal reservations.
The government has also assured that the report recommends a three-tier reservation system to accommodate the six communities for education and jobs while safeguarding existing ST groups.
The Deori Assong Sixth Schedule Demand Committee is pushing for the inclusion of the Deori community in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
The Deoris are already Scheduled Tribes and believe they have the right to be included in the Sixth Schedule for political and other aspirations.
The Deori Autonomous Council (DAC) was created for the community's development but is not yet under the Sixth Schedule.
Sixth Schedule status would give the DAC financial and administrative autonomy, strengthening land rights and protecting the community's resources and cultural heritage.
The committee cited the examples of the Bodos, Karbis, and Dimasas autonomous councils to justify their demand.
