Microsoft to Block OpenAI Atlas Browser
Microsoft is planning to make it harder for people to download a new browser called ChatGPT Atlas on Windows 11.
This browser is made by OpenAI and uses AI to help with tasks.
Microsoft wants to keep people using its own browser, Edge, so it might show messages or ads to discourage people from switching.
This is similar to how Microsoft has tried to keep people from using Google Chrome in the past.
The ChatGPT Atlas browser is not yet available for Windows, but Microsoft is preparing for when it does launch.
Other companies are also making AI-powered browsers, so this is a big competition.
Microsoft is planning to intercept or discourage downloads of OpenAI’s ChatGPT Atlas browser on Windows 11.
New experimental flags in the Edge Canary preview build suggest that Edge could display promotional banners, pop-ups, or highlighted search results when users attempt to search for or download Atlas via Bing in Edge.
Microsoft has long employed similar methods to retain users from switching to Chrome, such as showing banners promoting Edge’s advantages.
ChatGPT Atlas is an AI-first browser launched by OpenAI in late 2025 for macOS, with Windows support in development. It integrates ChatGPT deeply, offering features like Agent Mode for automating multi-step tasks and contextual assistance across tabs.
Despite being the default browser on Windows 11, Edge continues to lag behind Chrome in the global desktop market share.
