Ladakh Targets Thoise Civil Flights, Assesses Kargil Airport Readiness

Ladakh Targets Thoise Civil Flights, Assesses Kargil Airport Readiness

Ladakh is working to make travel to remote areas easier by air.

Thoise Airport in Nubra Valley may begin civilian flights by December 2026.

This date is a target, not a confirmed launch date.

The airport’s runway is being resurfaced and is expected to be ready by November 2026.

Officials may first use a refurbished terminal that already serves charter flights.

A larger civil terminal is planned on five acres approved by the Indian Air Force.

Kargil Airport will be inspected on September 1, 2026, to see what it needs for civilian flights.

Better air links could help residents, tourists and local businesses in places such as Turtuk, Kargil and Drass.
