Andhra Pradesh Revives BC Quotas, Names Anganwadi Worker MLC

Andhra Pradesh wants to give Backward Classes larger reserved shares in local elections.

The proposed share is 34% in rural local bodies and 33.33% in urban local bodies.

Minister S Savitha called the move a historic day for BCs.

Minister Kondapalli Srinivas called it a golden chapter for the community.

The ministers said an earlier government had reduced the reservation from 34% to 24%.

They said this reduction caused BCs to lose more than 16,800 elected positions.

The Cabinet had approved the proposal, and the Assembly was discussing the Bill.

The government also nominated Dalavai Ramadevi, an Anganwadi worker from the BC community, as an MLC.

Government leaders said these actions would improve political representation for BCs.
