President Murmu Visits Manipur Amid Shutdown
President Droupadi Murmu is visiting Manipur for two days on December 11-12.
She will watch a polo match, attend a civic reception, and inaugurate new projects.
She will also honor brave women warriors at the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex.
The Kuki-Zo Council welcomes her visit, hoping it will bring attention to the tribal communities' struggles.
However, a group called CorCom, which represents some Meitei insurgents, has called for a shutdown during her visit, saying it won't help peace.
The roads are being fixed and decorated for her visit.
This is the first visit by a constitutional head since the ethnic violence started in May 2023.
More than 260 people have been killed and thousands have been displaced in the conflict between Meiteis and Kukis.
President Droupadi Murmu began her two-day visit to Manipur on December 11, her first visit to the state since becoming President.
Her itinerary includes a polo exhibition match, a civic reception, and participation in the 86th Nupi Lal Day observance.
The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) welcomes her visit, hoping it will bring attention to the tribal communities' struggles and promote peace.
CorCom, an alliance of Meitei insurgent groups, has called for a total shutdown across the state during the President's visit, except for Nupi Lal Day events.
Security has been beefed up across Manipur, with roads being repaired and adorned for the President's visit, and normal life partially affected due to the shutdown.
