India Launches National Rare Blood Donor Registry
India now has a special list of people with rare blood types called the rare blood donor registry.
This helps people who need blood transfusions, especially those with conditions like thalassemia.
Many people in India need blood transfusions because of diseases, accidents, and other health issues.
The registry is being linked to a national platform so all blood banks can share information about rare blood donors, making it easier to find the right blood when it's needed.
This system is similar to programs already in place in other countries.
ICMR created India's first national rare blood donor registry.
The registry aims to help patients with rare blood types, especially those with thalassemia or sickle cell disease.
The registry includes over 600 donors negative for a combination of antigens and 250 very rare blood group donors.
There is a plan to integrate the registry with e-Raktakosh to allow blood banks to contribute donors.
India relies heavily on blood transfusions due to diseases, accidents, and pregnancy complications.
